About 1.8 million tons of food waste are produced annually in Hungary. A significant proportion of this – about one quarter – is produced in households. According to the results of national research it means 68 kg per person, annually, and one third of it could have been avoidable. Although this amount lags behind some extremely wasting countries, it still accounts for a major part of Hungarian customers’ baskets. Altogether we have to count with 300,000 tonnes of biodegradable waste, which has a serious impact on our environment, considering not only its distruction but the process of production, as well.

Recognizing the problem, the National Food Chain Safety Office (NFCSO/NÉBIH) started its ’Wasteless’ programme with the financial support of the European Unions LIFE (L’Instrument Financier pour l’Environnement Environmental) subprogramme, with the aim to decrease the amount of Hungarian food wasted. While determining the aims of the programme, the tematic priorities of the 7th Environmental Action Programme of the European Union were applied.


Thus the main objectives of the project are the following:

  1. Decreasing the proportion of food waste among Hungarian families, through changing consumers’ attitude and behavioral patterns
  2. Increasing the foodwaste and food wastage awareness and the level of knowledge of children attending primary school
  3. Collecting good practices which contribute to prevention of generating food waste, and based on that, elaborating a guide book for the concerned food chain participans
  4. Collaboration and cooperation with other EU memberstates, in order to contribute to the international implementation of the project’s results.
