Wasteless introduction at 28th Economic Forum, Krynica

Wasteless had the opportunity to introduce the food waste situation in Hungary and give a speech on the topic, at the beginning of September, at the 28th Economic Forum in Krynica, where 6 plenary sessions and 180 discussion panels took place during the 3 days of the event.

The discussion panel started with Mr Kasza’s presentation Food Waste at the Plate – the Hungarian Case Study for Food Waste Prevention, which introduced the origin of the Wasteless campaign, the history of NFCSO, the contradictory questions and answers for food waste related issues taking food safety into consideration, the most recently wasted food categories and their quantity in Hungary. The presentation also highlighted the programme’s main activities with a focus on the main deliverables such as the education materials (student’s book with teacher’s guide and working book, PowerPoint presentations providing help for primary school teachers, awareness-raising games for children and adults as well) and the public awareness campaign containing replicable elements. The aim of identifying and developing best practices in food waste prevention was also emphasized, among which one of the most important outcomes of the project was also introduced. Cooperating with relevant stakeholders and public authorities, The Guide for good hygiene practice (GHP) for hospitality and catering based on the regulation (EC) No 852/2004 (into which the most essential elements of the Guide created by the Working Group of Catering has been transplanted) was published online.

The presentation was a basis for the further discussion among the panel participants. As a result of the discussion, the participants agreed that pupils’ education might be the most effective way to reduce the amount of food waste generated. Every participant agreed that all the challenges are universally known but not yet solved.
