Nébih’s Wasteless programme launches a mascot design competition to mark its 10th anniversary

To mark the 10th anniversary of its Wasteless programme, the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) is launching a nationwide mascot design competition open to both children and adults. The goal is to create a friendly, easily recognizable mascot that can further strengthen awareness of food waste prevention. Design proposals for the new mascot—set to become a central visual element of the Wasteless programme—can be submitted until March 22.

Food waste is one of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges, placing a heavy burden on both the environment and the economy. Since 2016, the Nébih’s Wasteless programme has been working to reduce food waste by influencing everyday consumer decisions. Encouragingly, these efforts are delivering results: according to a survey conducted by Nébih, food waste in Hungarian households has fallen by nearly one third in recent years, with the Wasteless programme playing a significant role in this improvement.

Launched as part of the anniversary celebrations, the mascot design competition aims to create a visually compelling figure that can further help the programme deliver its messages related to reducing household food waste. The competition is open to individuals and teams of up to five participants, from elementary school students to adults. Entrants are invited to create a mascot that clearly reflects the theme of food waste prevention, appeals to both children and adults, and can be adapted for use as a plush toy or costume.

The artworks may be created using any technique. To apply, participants must submit a brief written depiction of their mascot along with a drawing or photograph. The deadline for submissions is March 22, 2026.

Submissions will be evaluated by the members of the Wasteless programme and a public vote. Winners in each category will receive valuable gift vouchers, and the selected design may go on to become the official mascot of the Wasteless programme.
